I work on many types of civil law cases.
In the U.S., there are two primary types of legal cases: criminal law and civil law. Generally speaking, criminal law cases deal with behaviors considered an offense against the state, public, or society. These cases may involve theft, drunk driving, assault, murder, and other crimes. Comparatively, civil law cases cover actions that cause nuisance, injury or damages to a person or a business. These cases may include negligence, breach of contract, defamation, harassment or other forms of negative behavior.
In civil cases, a claim is served on the offender. If the claim may not be settled between the parties, a suit follows which requires a judge or jury to resolve it. The goal is to seek the right type of remedy whether it is an award of money or a judgment requiring the offender to perform or desist from performing the offending activity.
